What makes a compelling movie protagonist?

A compelling protagonist undergoes growth and transformation throughout the film, facing challenges that resonate with audiences. Whether flawed or heroic, they possess depth and complexity, anchoring the story with their journey. The audience should also be able to connect with the protagonist, if they cannot connect, they will not understands why the character behaves such in certain situation. Protagonists should be identifiable.

I like a protagonist who has been through a lot of difficulties in their life but still became a decent human being.

Here is an example, for contrast:

• One guy killed a man when he learned that his father was not his real father. He thought that father was trying to kick him out! It was not true. The father had known along that his wife had a baby for another man. But he raised the child as if he were his own son. That person wanted to blame the father and try to justify his crime. He was not a decent human being.

I don't like protagonists who want to blame others for the bad things they do.

They should possess a clear set of goals and motivations that drive the narrative forward, while also exhibiting a complex inner life and emotional depth. The most compelling protagonists are those who undergo a transformative arc, whether it be personal growth, moral reckoning, or an evolution of their worldview.
