I think it was probably Digimon Adventure. I remember as a kid, I wasn't really a Pokemon kid, even gotten into arguments in school because it was much more popular than Digimon (that marathon event we had on our local TV network playing Pokemon episodes against Digimon really didn't help). But I loved every second of watching that show because of its more emotional storytelling. Plus, the music kicked ass compared to Pokemon. lol Well, I was watching the local English dub they used in Singapore, which had the original awesome Japanese music in it, so it probably wasn't the same experience you Americans had with that inferior American dub - no offense. lol
It was either that or Cardcaptor Sakura. That was another fun one, interesting magic tarot cards with unique powers, plus yet another show with a catchy music. It was like Pokemon with magic. The romance between Sakura and Syaoran was fun too.
