While it's true adults have authority over children, there is no need to talk down to them with an attitude. It seems like rubbing in superiority. Anyway, in jobs like teaching or being a corrections officer, this can cause you to get hated by those in places against their will and that's not cool.

This is what I encountered growing up. My father is the town drunk and my mother is mentally unstable. I never received one day of respect from either one of them. Conversely I became aggressive with trust issues. I do not talk down to children because I fully understand the implications having lived through it.

I don't like children but that is no reason to talk down to them. Some of them are more intelligent and mature than adults.

Most parents in my part of the world don't care about the feelings of their children. They talk down on them at every opportunity.

We must discipline our children but at the same time, it should not be used as an excuse to degrade them or talk to them in a way where they lose their self-esteem.

That sounds about right. (y)

Yes, this is actually a major issue here in my country. A lot of children have lost self confidence simply because they have heard their parents said negative things about them from time to time.

That's why many children go to the outside world feeling a sense of low self confidence and inadequacy, but those things have germinated in their hearts due to the treatment of the parents.

Exactly, to be able to correct this, it would take a lot of effort and if possible changing their thinking process from scratch.

It's possible to have an opposite situation, though. Prideful and over-confident kids are just as bad.

Good point too. Again, that is mostly the doing of the parents.

It's usually a viscous cycle, I think. People repeat what their parents did to them.

That's what I'm experiencing these days. My son, who doesn't like to study, always gets scolded by me, and the situation is that he doesn't like me and doesn't want to talk to me. I think I won't be able to change him, but I can change myself.

I believe that you can still talk sense into him. Afterall, you are doing it for his own good, for him to have a better future.

I have been trying to make him understand this for the last two years, but in vain. He is not understanding it. It is hard to make kids understand valuable things these days.

That's true, especially when they have their peers and age mates doing whatever they like without the parents stopping them. So now they feel that you trying to tell them what to do is unfair and too rigid.
Still keep trying though, one day he will come to understand.

I don't know when that day will come. These days kids have oversmart their parents in every thing. They are not ready to follow what their parents say like we used to do when were kids.

Which is also one reason why most kids these days don't listen. They feel their parents are old fashioned, they don't know the latest trends and happenings.

Right, parents feel that the children are getting disobedient and rebellious. On the other hand, the children feels that the parents are old fashioned and outdated. And that is usually the beginning of most broken relationships between parents and children.

Exactly both parties do not want to take out time to understand each other. This is where communication comes in. If they can communicate with one another, things would be a lot better.
