Hank and the Great Glass Elevator
Season: 5
Episode: 11
Air date: 2001-02-11

Guest stars: Ellen Barkin,Ann Richards,David Herman
Bill and former Texas governor Ann Richards hit it off after a chance meeting resulting from Hank's reluctant prank in an Austin hotel.

I don't get propane. Must be an American thing. I've never seen anyone barbecue with propane in Singapore, only charcoal. We do cook with propane, but not barbecue. You might as well be eating your steak well-done. Who needs that smokey flavor when you have "clean energy?" Ugh.

As for Bill, he screwed up big time with Ann, but it's always nice to see a Bill-centric episode where he grows a little more self-esteem.

Now Who's the Dummy?
Season: 5
Episode: 12
Air date: 2001-02-18

Guest stars: Tom Poston,Danny Trejo
Bobby's ventriloquist's dummy gets more of Hank's attention than Bobby, but it's Dale who harbors a grudge against the wooden being.

Ventriloquist dummies are almost as creepy as clowns (clowns still win the day though because of John Wayne Gacy), but it's cute to see Bobby spend time with Hank in a meaningful way for once. Shame it didn't work out, but Bobby is better off not pretending to be another persona; wouldn't do wonders for his self-esteem. Glad Hank supports that like a good father.
King of the Hill
Ho Yeah!
Season: 5
Episode: 13
Air date: 2001-02-25

Guest stars: Snoop Dogg,Renée Zellweger,David Herman,Dave Thomas
Unaware that the new employee at Strickland Propane is a prostitute, Peggy becomes her best friend and even offers her a place to stay--Hank's den.

Man, this episode is wild. Hank accidentally becoming a pimp due to his naivety and Peggy mistaken as one of his pimps. Phew. It's one of the craziest episodes of this show I've ever seen, especially with Snoop Dogg the man guest starring as Alabaster the actual pimp.

I love how this all feels like a fever dream, especially with that high-speed chase between Alabaster and Hank at the end. I hope we get to see more of Tammi. She's sweet. Renée Zellweger playing the role was probably because she's getting a big movie a month after this episode's release, ala "Bridget Jones' Diary", so she probably wouldn't have time for a small TV animated series, but still, would like to see more of her.
King of the Hill
The Exterminator
Season: 5
Episode: 14
Air date: 2001-03-04

Guest stars: Breckin Meyer,Lisa Kudrow,Stephen Tobolowsky,David Herman,Jim Dauterive
Repeated exposure to poisons forces Dale out of extermination and into a desk job that leads him back into extermination--of careers.

Dale has always been portrayed as this exaggerated version of a goofy redneck Texan, so it's great to be reminded that he can be competent at his job when he's not being a complete idiot. His lack of empathy towards people (beyond his own family) also meant that being a HR assistant vice president whose job is just to fire people all day was easy street for Dale. Really excellent episode that played to Dale's strengths and making him grow a little.
King of the Hill
Luanne Virgin 2.0
Season: 5
Episode: 15
Air date: 2001-03-11

Guest stars: Nathan Fillion,Owen Wilson
As Luanne's sponsor in a sexual-abstinence program, Peggy has to testify about her lifetime total of sexual partners--and it's more than one.

I was initially gonna defend Peggy because I felt Hank was being unreasonably mad at her over a mistake she did over 20 years ago, but then I remember that Peggy did the same to Hank over an even more trivial matter - his first kiss not belonging to Peggy (even though he was practically forced-kiss) - back in season 2, "I Remember Mono". I still think Hank's being unreasonably thickheaded, but man, karma sure is a bitch, huh, Pegster?

I like Luanne because I think she can be pretty innocent in her naivety and emotional sensitivity, but it's episodes like this that make her rather airheaded. You're not a Disney Princess, Luanne; you're not Anna of Arendelle. You don't go around marrying people you just met when the boy is obviously horny for you. lol

Also, this whole born again virgin crap is pretty silly. I'm pretty open-minded about premarital sex so long as you practice safe sex and know what you're getting into as a consensual adult. The idea of sexual abstinence is about as alien to me as veganism; no offense. Well, maybe not that alien. I could certainly understand the appeal of keeping your body pure till you meet your one true love, but I guess I'm just a lot more pragmatic when it comes to body functions. It's just sex.
King of the Hill
Hank's Choice
Season: 5
Episode: 16
Air date: 2001-04-01

Guest stars: David Herman
When Bobby develops an allergy to Ladybird, Hank builds a doghouse, an elaborate accommodation that's perfect--for Bobby.

Class act, Hank Hill, willing to put the well-being of his dog over his own flesh and blood. He's just one short straw away from being as sociopathic as Tony Soprano. At least he came to his senses.

Leave it to Bobby to be the better man though and make the right decision on his own.
King of the Hill
It's Not Easy Being Green
Season: 5
Episode: 17
Air date: 2001-04-08

Guest stars: David Herman,Paul Giamatti,Chelcie Ross
Hank joins Bobby's environmental effort, but only to preserve a long-time cover-up concerning a mishap with Boomhauer's car in high school.

"Environmental nutjob" might be a tad too harsh, but I'm like Mr. Pink in terms of where I stand in regards to environmentalism - I'm not gonna play ball and change my lifestyle unless it's against the law to pollute. Bobby Hill was buying into that extremist environmentalist attitude and almost got arrested for unlawful protesting if not for Hank, so shut up about Hank being a bad parent this episode because if it was me, I would have let my son get arrested to teach him a lesson. Play stupid games, win stupid prizes, son. Dang ol' liberals, man, and their preachy attitude trying to force their performative messaging on me instead of the government. If you wanna actually save Earth, target the right people, not those caught in the crossfire that have nothing to do with anti-environmental policies.

Regarding Boomhauer and Sally though, I think Boomhauer had the right to be angry about Hank and the others (glad Boomhauer caught onto the act that Dale and Bill were in on it too with that prank long ago, calling them traitors for leaving Hank to dry), but on the other hand, it was just teenagers being idiots (see the hippie crowd this episode that includes Bobby Hill). I think Boomhauer's too good (including sniffing out Dale and Bill's lies) to be hanging out with Hank and the rest though. lol Hank, Dale and Bill have their own faults, but I haven't seen any egregious behavior from Boomhauer save for his unique speech pattern.
King of the Hill
The Trouble with Gribbles
Season: 5
Episode: 18
Air date: 2001-04-22

Guest stars: David Herman,Castulo Guerra,Phil Hendrie,Robert Stack
Dale plans to buy Nancy a face-lift by suing a tobacco company, which countersues--and carelessly bugs his home.

Dale's an idiot, and the way the station sexualized Luanne (having her wear a blue dress do that only the chest portion of her dress was visible against the blue-screen) was disgusting. Dale could have double-sued the TV station,, not just for discrimination against Nancy's age, but for sexual exploitation of Luanne, but that kind of logic might have been too much for the brain-dead Gribble.

I found Nancy's past affair with John Redcorn problematic, but she broke it off many episodes ago because she realized how much she loves Dale, but man, this episode just proves she's too good for that absolute conspiracy-nut, lawn-sabotaging asshat moron who's not only a cuckoid, but probably pathetic in bed as well. That's why Nancy ran off to another man!

The fact that Bill, the man who's crying about his divorced wife all series, had to be the one to remind Dale of what he lost, was the absolute rock bottom Gribble has hit.
King of the Hill
Hank's Back Story
Season: 5
Episode: 19
Air date: 2001-05-06

Guest stars: Harry Groener,Tom McGowan,Dave Thomas
Wearing a prosthetic rump relieves Hank's back pain, but makes him the butt of friends' jokes as they all prepare for a riding-mower race.

I'm disappointed in Boomhauer participating in laughing along and not helping Hank or stopping Dale too. I take back what I said about him from two episodes ago, in "It's Not Easy Being Green", that he's one of the more decent ones among the gang.

In fact, Hank should've just whaled on Dale and give him a good socking. Even with Cotton present, Dale would just squeal like a bitch. Hell, I would've socked Cotton too even if he was my dad. Both of them have it long time coming, not just for this latest mockery. I don't know why Hank keeps hanging out with his friends, especially Dale; they're all kinda selfish and dickish.

I do like that it didn't just end on a predictable note of Hank winning, but I don't think Boomhauer deserves to win either.

And Bobby, shame on you for your usual insensitive remarks of claiming there's something wrong with Hank because of his medical disorder. That boy ain't right indeed. He's always got a foot in his mouth.

Kidney Boy and Hamster Girl: A Love Story
Season: 5
Episode: 20
Air date: 2001-05-13

Guest stars: Breckin Meyer,Natasha Melnick,Madeline Zima,Gwen Stefani,Adrian Young,David Herman,Tom Dumont,Tony Kanal,Jake Visser
Bobby avoids a beating by high schoolers by pretending to be one of them.

DON'T SPEEEEEAK! IT'S GWEN STAFANI VOICING AS HERSELF! lol Great stuff at the end there.

This is one of those episodes where Bobby's own bullheadedness got the better of him. At least he's punished for it, because Hank was right, "That boy ain't right."

Coincidentally, I just watched Daria's TV movie, "Is It College Yet?" a few hours ago, which had another teenage middle-schooler, Quinn, discovering that older kids ain't really all that cool. In this episode's case, Bobby Hill gets to see the ugliness behind the glamour of highschool. Still, they had No Doubt singing for a prom, for what it's worth.

Also another episode where I question, "Why does Hank hang out with these guys?" as they laugh at Hank when the porta john he uses falls apart.
