Gaming Do you feel video game tutorials can go overboard?

Shortie⁷
I think tutorials can absolutely go overboard—but it’s not just about length or complexity. It’s about execution. There are plenty of ways to do tutorials right, and just as many ways to do them wrong.

Personally, I’m usually looking for something short and intuitive—like a quick button guide or move tutorial that fits naturally into the story or kicks in as soon as you drop into the game. That kind of seamless integration keeps the momentum going and respects the player’s time.

That said, more story-driven tutorials can work well too if the game introduces mechanics gradually and meaningfully. The problem is when that pacing breaks down—when tutorials drag out, gatekeep core features, or slow progression to a crawl. It’s even worse on replays, where you're forced to slog through the same hand-holding all over again.

In the end, a good tutorial should empower the player, not babysit them. It should teach just enough to get you started, then trust you to learn by doing. Games that strike that balance tend to leave a much better impression.
