Overview: Many years ago, the last remnants of humanity were forced to retreat behind the towering walls of a fortified city to escape the massive, man-eating Titans that roamed the land outside their fortress. Only the heroic members of the Scouting Legion dared to stray beyond the safety of the walls – but even those brave warriors seldom returned alive. Those within the city clung to the illusion of a peaceful existence until the day that dream was shattered, and their slim chance at survival was reduced to one horrifying choice: kill – or be devoured!

The survey corps and the wall garrison must protect the Orvud District from the impending attack of Rod Reiss' titan.

That Titan is pure nightmare fuel. It's something straight out of Cronenberg. lol I know this anime has gore, but I wasn't expecting body horror.

Having seen a glimpse of his father's memories, Eren attempts to track down a man hoping they might shed some light on his father's secrets.

So Sadies is just Snape. lol Great backstory though. I love how this show, not just this episode, constantly subverts shounen anime tropes; Eren's not special, and neither is Sadies, which was a lesson he tried to convey to Eren to prevent Eren from living through the same misery and regrets, hence the whole tough teacher act.

Also, I love how much Eren and his friends have grown though, and the rest of the Survey Corps just got intimidated by their "I've seen shit that will haunt you" stare.

The Scouts gather for a feisty feast before leaving to retake Wall Maria to uncover what's hidden in the basement once and for all.

BRO, WHAT THE FUCK WAS THAT ENDING? LMAO It was so freaking awesome, that trolling tease. I love how Isayama just keeps trolling his fans and deconstruct the shounen anime tropes in unexpected ways. Like, if this was Fairy Tail or some typical shounen anime, the scene before the big fight would have glorious celebration and full of optimism, not some bizarre Twin Peaks type glitch out that tease the audience that things are actually gonna get more depressing from here on out.

So many questions with that ending tease, and my mind is riddled with possibilities what those answers might be. Thankfully, I don't have to wait six months, though I was almost tempted to postpone my viewing of season 3, part 2 after seeing that tease.

The actual episode though was pretty great as well, with the gang finally having them semblance of normalcy before the huge fight, talking about their hopes and dreams. Usually, this kind of scene would be a bit boring for me, but in the context of calm before the storm as it is here, it's very effective and works well to grant the gang that little bit of bliss they deserve after fighting for so long.

But as we all know... shit's about to go down. I was kinda spoiled a little bit about Eren's role in season 4, just the broad strokes, nothing detailed, so I can kinda speculate what that ending tease might be about... I love how shocked Mikasa looks in that scene, like they just did something horrible and it traumatized her. Probably something to do with Eren's basement.
"Attack on Titan, Lost Girls" OVA, episode 3: Lost in the Cruel World

An alternate universe take on Mikasa and Eren that gave more insight into Mikasa's view of Eren. It's a pretty interesting perspective, if nothing significant since it didn't really happen. I've read, however, that there's some heavy foreshadowing at play here regarding the future of the show in regards to Eren, and I can see how that can play out.

Guest stars: Yoshimasa Hosoya,Tomokazu Sugita,Daisuke Ono,Shuhei Matsuda,Yuuki Sanpei,Jun Miyamoto,Saki Endo,Motoki Sakuma,Yasuhiro Mamiya,Takahiro Yoshino
The operation to retake Wall Maria commences in Shiganshina, the town where everything began. But when the Scouts arrive, something seems very wrong.

Bro, I haven't heard the 立body機motion soundtrack theme since season 1! What an appropriate throwback now that the Scouts are taking back Wall Maria. WE ARE SO BACK, BABY!!!

Except of course, it was too freaking easy. lol Of course it's a trap. Great on Armin to spot it though. The man's practically a psychic.

And that "To be continued", man. By season 3, part 2, audiences are wise enough to the tropes that we'd know that it's a trap, and that the climaxes will be cut off, teasing us in the most sadistic way.

I love that the OP for season 3 part 2 is basically Wit Studio reverting to what the audiences love, the first two seasons' OPs combined together. lmao Probably because the fans complained too much about part 1's OP.

Thunder Spears
Season: 3
Episode: 14
Air date: 2019-05-06

Guest stars: Yoshimasa Hosoya,Tomokazu Sugita,Takehito Koyasu,Daisuke Ono,Shuhei Matsuda,Motoki Sakuma,Katsufumi Yachi,Masaya Fukunishi,Toru Nara,Kensho Ono
Against a rush of enemies, the Scouts scramble to defend their horses. But despite falling into a trap, they have their own surprise for the Armored Titan.

BRO, lol these freaking cliffhangers. This one is easily as bad as those from season 2, if not worse. RIGHT AT THE VERY LAST MINUTE when we were about to find out. lmao

Anyway, the episode is otherwise solid. We finally get one up on the Armored Titan, though knowing this universe, I'm sure that victory won't last long.

We also get to learn more of Erwin's motivation, and honestly, I find it hard to blame him. Sometimes you need a ruthless leader to carry the team forward, self-entitled motivation or not. At least Erwin gets the job done.

Those Thunder Spears though, damn. Yeah, science! as a certain pothead once said.

Guest stars: Yoshimasa Hosoya,Tomohisa Hashizume,Takehito Koyasu,Manami Numakura,Daisuke Ono,Rintaro Nishi,Ryota Iwasaki,Shuhei Matsuda,Masaya Fukunishi,Ryota Osaka,Yu Shimamura
Though their Thunder Spears prove effective, the Scouts' celebration is short-lived as disaster descends upon Shiganshina.

That's why you always kill the monster twice - slicing him up, cut him into pieces, shoot him in the head again just to make sure. Honestly, Levi should've picked this up, given that he was the one who stabbed Reiner in the head earlier.

We also find out more about Reiner and Bertholdt's motivation, and that it might not be as malicious as it seem. I have a feeling we'll just find out that they're the oppressed all along, and the Titans are just the poor fighting back or some shit. Levi's OVAs really hinted strongly at this after all. If that's the case, Levi joined the wrong team, which might further explain why his reaction was like that in the flash-forward at the end of season 3, episode 12.

I also don't know how the heck they're gonna be the Colossal Titan, let alone the Beast Titan. lol Erwin's deck is pretty stacked by this point. We might get a major loss or character death from Erwin's squad.

Perfect Game
Season: 3
Episode: 16

While one front in the battle is rained on by flames, the other is battered by boulders. With no way out, the Scouts are forced to fight or die trying.

This episode properly reconstructed the shounen anime after deconstructing it for a couple of seasons. Despite this episode's "THE ALL HOPE IS LOST MOMENT!", Erwin manages to utilize the shounen trope of fighting spirit and the refusal to give up normally reserved for invulnerable shounen heroes with power-ups or a trick up their sleeves. Erwin and Levin and the greenhorn recruits have nothing except their courage and hope that whomever survive could honor their sacrifice - but that's what makes the shounen trope SO meaningful and amazing.

It's just such a brilliant way of turning your typical shounen anime on its head. I love deconstructions like Madoka Magica's darker take on magical girls, but I think Attack on Titan did a far more thorough job of just taking down your typical battle shounen like Fairy Tail and just apply logic and realism to it while retaining the core of what made it great, whether it's friendship, loyalty, honor, or sacrifice.

Erwin's confession regarding his dream of seeing the basement just as he's about to march to his sacrifice is also such a darkly humorous one because yes, we the audience wanna see it too... Alas, Erwin. Honestly, I thought this was gonna be his heel turn moment as he sacrifices everyone for the sake of his dream, but nah, Erwin's a real one till the end. What a great leader.

That Beast Titan though is something truly screwed up. lol Just wiping out so many scouts in one go. Christ. I don't know how they're gonna take him down.

As Erwin’s heroic charge buys Levi time to confront the Beast Titan, Armin comes up with a plan of his own that lays it all on the line.

Armin: "I didn't lose."
Eren: "Huh?"
Armin: "Because I didn't run away."

Every decade of television, there will come a special TV episode that redefines prestige TV.

This is that episode.

Everything absolutely works in this episode, and not just because of its content alone. All the cliffhangers, all the setups, all the sacrifices, it all lead up to this. Unlike a typical shounen anime, you can feel the weight of victory here, what "never giving up" actually meant... and what it ultimately cost.

I guess I hyped up the Beast Titan a bit too much. Just a bit. Levi's finest moment here this episode. Bloodlusted Levi is based Levi, period.

Everyone kinda knew that Hange wasn't dead - no body, no death - but her triumphant return was still one of the most cheerworthy moments of this series, riding in with that badass takedown.

And man, Bertolt Hoover. That moment when he realized Armin's trap, it was a beautiful execution, the way the hardened shell is slowly revealed, the way the camera turns right as Bertolt turns - too late, Eren swings up with the camera swinging along from a low angle shot, "GOT YOU!" he shouted, and it was over. Unbelievable.

Of course, the MVP moment still went to Armin, or as Eren called it, "The bravest out of all of us." I highly doubt Armin has survived with the state of his wounds, but I've also been spoiled with certain information that hints otherwise so... who knows.

Overall, this episode was a freaking masterpiece, a rollercoaster from start to finish.

And the best part? The episode preview shows that we're just getting started. The real story begins next episode... "Midnight Sun".

While picking up the pieces from the costly battle, tensions rise when deciding which of the wounded Scouts to use the single syringe on.

"Could I ask you to forgive him? He had no choice but to become a demon. We're the ones who forced him into it. He was finally freed from this hell, but we were about to call him back for another round. It's time for us to let him rest now." - Levi on Erwin, after realizing that his parting words were part of the reason Erwin rode to his death.

And here we are... that shocking scene at the end of Season 3 Part 1, episode 12, when we were suddenly treated to a flash-forward scene where Eren, Mikasa and Levi suddenly got into some kind of conflict. Honestly, I was expecting something else, like them learning about the truth of the Titans and Eren and Mikasa committing war crimes despite that face. After last episode, "Hero", I thought it might have been Eren and Mikasa taking revenge on Bertolt and Levi confronting them. But I guess this revelation makes much more sense, if not as shocking. lol The dilemma was still great though and so well done, choosing between their commander or their best friend.

I especially love Hange's words to Mikasa though that made me tear up like a bitch: "I have people I want to bring back too, hundreds of them, people I've known since I joined the Corps," all as she remembered Moblit Berner pushing her away to sacrifice himself and saving her life.

I also like that it didn't just turn into a shitshow and Levi took control of that situation, because it just makes his decision to save Armin instead much more meaningful.

When all is said and done though, I think Levi partially blames himself for Erwin, especially since he failed to kill the Beast Titan, so ultimately, even he might have been affected emotionally too, much like Eren. I think he made the right call though - Armin was the one that saved their asses more than half the times, more than Erwin. I love Erwin as a leader, but Armin's a wild card. You need people like him that can think outside the box, not just another soldier.

The Scouts reflect on all they have gained and lost in their mission. With their enemies gone, Eren and the Scouts finally enter the basement to uncover the truth that will change everything.

Freaking. Anime. Blue-balled! As Suraj from the Normies would put it. Open door, just an office. Open desk, just an empty drawer. False bottom in drawer, just three books. Open book, JUST A FREAKING PHOTO. Jesus Christ.

Still, I guess this is it, going by all the comments: this is the actual story. Prologue's over. Tutorial's over. Welcome to the real game.

I have a feeling I know what's going on, especially with Grisha's armband as a child and that WWI blimp in the sky... but let's see if my intuition is correct.

A look into Grisha's memories shows Eren the many secrets his father was hiding, including one which led to his mother's demise.

Great episode, but to be honest, not really as shocking of a twist as I had expected. The clues were all there, all the way back in season 2 with Ymir's flashbacks and how Titans were created, not to mention Reiner and Bertolt's rhetoric about whom the real monsters are, and of course, the class divide implied in Levi's OVA. This episode merely filled in the missing pieces of that puzzle.

Still, I see that Zeke has always been a tool. That boy ain't right.

Poor Dina though, not even having a chance to turn human again before being ripped apart by Titans (no thanks to Eren). Man, that rewatch's gonna be so weird. lmao. Also, let's face it: Dina straight up ate Carla out of spite to Grisha. LMAO Subconsciously spiting her cheating ex.

Though it's met with hope and despair, the truth is made public. The Scouts then venture beyond the walls to see if it's everything they dreamed of.

So... they finally reached the ocean. But as Eren implied, it hardly seems worth it at all.

A storm is coming. Beyond that sea, bloodshed awaits. The weight of their actions (and the possible consequences) could be felt throughout this episode. It's a perfect footnote to season 3, the season where they plunged their nails into the walls of the political world and tore them down, discovering the messiness of it all, and that they have to live with it.

This episode is merely one among many examples of why the anime is just so amazing compared to even the best shounen out there like Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood or even the popular 2011 remake of Hunter x Hunter (that I didn't really enjoy as much as the others did despite the hype), particularly in terms of subverting the typical tropes. But this episode alone offers something truly special: acquiring the McGuffin feels empty. Seeing the ocean... it's not quite the uplifting spirit one might expect from such an anime.

If anything, it feels like the signal fire of war.
