Why do software updates sometimes slow down older smartphone models?

Before giving out my Samsung Galaxy S20, I noticed that after updating the software of the phone, it usually makes it to be slow. I can't understand the reason why that happens because I was thinking the software update is supposed to help to improve the phones efficiency but it ends up making it worse.

Did you ever experience this after updating the software in your older smartphone models?
