When it comes to the purpose dreams serves, it usually depends on the individual. For some, it could be a way to get away from their reality. For others it could be a way their subconscious minds interact with them, and help them remember things.
As a rule my dreams are pleasant in nature. But every once in awhile I will dream about work and I am running around trying to solve the problem. Then I wake up and have to solve it for real.
