What is a URL?

When you want to access a website or a web page you will type a URL on a web browser. A URL (Uniform Resource Locator) is the address used to access a specific resource on the Internet, such as a web page, image, or file. It typically consists of a protocol such as "www" , "http://" or "https://"), a domain name, and a path to the resource. URL is very important for accessing any resources in the internet.

I never knew what a URL is or what it meant for a long time. I am a self taught internet user. So I don't know enough terminology.

A URL first of all helps your computer to locate the website that your needed resource is housed. It is like saying the area of a house address you are looking for. It goes ahead to help you locate the particular resource you are looking for. It could be a webpage or a media file.
