A tourist was pulled from a police station and murdered by a crowd in northwest Pakistan after being accused of blasphemy. The cops were attempting to protect the individual from the large group in Madyan, Swat district. On Thursday, the mob gathered after the man was accused of desecrating Islam's sacred book, the Quran. Lynchings are not uncommon following accusations of blasphemy, which is punishable by death in Pakistan. Last month, a Christian man was beaten and killed after being accused of burning pages from the Quran. A video of the most recent incident has sparked uproar on social media in Pakistan.
The footage shows the man's body being paraded through the streets before being set on fire. Human rights activists have long claimed that minorities are frequently the targets of charges. Approximately 96% of Pakistan's population is Muslim. Other countries, such as Iran, Brunei, and Mauritania, inflict the death penalty for insulting religion.
